Introducing Our Delta Teaching Fellows Program
In 2017, myself and a group of 8 other data professionals launched the Delta teaching fellowship program. This is the second big initiative started by Delta Analytics, a Bay Area non-profit that I founded four years ago, This program partners skilled volunteers with communities that are underserved with the goal of building technical capacity all over the world to empower communities to use data.
For 3 months in 2017, a team of Delta teaching fellows partnered with Moringa Schools in Nairobi, Kenya to work with students from across Africa excited about using data to help their communities. We taught our class in person, held office hours for the community, and visited organizations that are using data to have a social impact. Our goal was to introduce anybody (including those without an extensive math, statistics, or coding background) to machine learning. We used local Kenyan data from microfinance organization Kiva, and placed an equal emphasis on foundational machine learning concepts and coding deployment of algorithms.
Become part of 2018 Fellows Team
In 2018, we will continue to expand the teaching program to partners in the Bay Area and return to Kenya and Tanzania. We are looking for 6-12 passionate educators, machine learning researchers to join our team. In 2018 the Delta teaching fellow team will focus on:

- coding - build out intuitive coding labs using real world data. The goal of each coding lab should be to teach the coding skills necessary to translate data into actionable inights.
- curriculum development - emphasize the fundamentals of proper data science and expose students to what is possible using sophisticated machine learning methods.
- teaching in underserved communities
- open source curriculum and coding labs.

FAQ
How many teaching fellows will be selected? 6-12 fellows will be selected for the upcoming January to June 2018 cycle. Will teaching fellows be given a stipend? Delta Analytics does not offer stipends to data fellows, but fellows will be provided mentorship and training opportunities. Additionally, we provide food at each hackathon and a small budget for monthly activities with your team. When is the deadline to submit my application? Applicants are considered on a rolling basis. What are the different areas I can contribute to as a Delta teaching fellow? Delta teaching fellows: 1) contribute to new curriculum development (code in Python and theory) 2) expand upon existing content 3) work to make content as accessible as possible 4) teach in person in the Bay Area and internationally. I have a full time job, will I still be able a Delta teaching fellow? Yes. Most of our fellows work full time and donate their time to Delta in the free time. You may not be able to teach with one of our international partners because that requires a commitment of 1 month. How do we choose our partners? We choose partners who are known in the local community and learning ecosystem. Our partners allow us to expand our course internationally and at home locally in the Bay Area and support our mission of building technical capacity around the world. In 2018, we expect to work with 3 partner organizations. Two will be international, and one will be local to the Bay Area. Our commitments internationally last 4-6 weeks and require teaching fellows to relocate full time for the duration of the course. Where will I teach? Most of our teaching fellows develop curriculum and teach locally in the Bay Area. Much of what determines where you teach depends upon your personal availability and interest as well as the needs of our local partners. Will there be financial support for fellows traveling to teach with international partners? Yes, we are committed to covering basic costs (accommodation and transportation) for international teaching fellows. What is the expected time commitment for the teaching fellowship? This varies considerably depending on whether you decide to teach internationally full time for 4-6 weeks or donate your time in the Bay Area. For most fellows, the commitment will not exceed 5-10h a week. When will I hear back about my project and teammates? Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. You will hear back about project staffing and teammates in mid-November. |
